Zovirax Cream is an easy to rub in cream that turns clear and quickly disappears into the skin. It contains the antiviral agent aciclovir and the patented MAC-P carrier. This is because aciclovir is poorly absorbed by itself, so the MAC-P assists it to penetrate the skin and reach the site of the infection. It enters the cells that are infected with the cold sore virus and helps to stop the virus multiplication. There are four stages to a cold sore:
- Tingle Stage - The area of skin tingles/itches as a warning that the cold sore is developing and this will generally last for about 24 hours. If you treat now, you could stop the cold sore appearing.
- Blister Stage - A small, raised spot swells on the area and forms a painful single blister or cluster of blisters. When the blister first breaks through the skin, healing can take several days. If you treat now, you can help to speed up the healing by days.
- Weeping Stage - The blisters collapse and join up to form a large, weeping sore on the area. The virus is very infectious and can spread very easily at this stage.
- Scab Stage - The blisters dry out and heal with a scab forming. If the scab is picked at, it may crack painfully and bleed.
A cold sore is an infection which is caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV). Most of the population carries the virus, although not everybody gets attacks or cold sores. It is usually caught during childhood, and it passes through the skin, travels up a nerve then hides in a nerve junction until it is reactivated. When the virus is reactivated, it travels down the nerve to the face and starts to replicate which is the tingling sensation that occurs. There are many different causes for the cold sore virus to reactivate, including:
